Credit Check Rental
A rental credit check is when your landlord pulls your credit report to see how reliably you pay your bills — and your score matters more than you’d think when competing for an apartment.
What Score Do You Need?
There’s no universal minimum, but here’s what most markets look like. A score of 720+ gets you approved almost anywhere without extra conditions. 650-719 is fine for most apartments, though luxury buildings may hesitate. 580-649 means you’ll likely need a co-signer, larger deposit, or prepaid rent. Below 580, expect rejections from corporate landlords — though individual landlords may work with you if your income is strong.
What Landlords See on Your Report
They see your credit score, open accounts, payment history, collections, bankruptcies, and total debt. Late payments from 3 years ago hurt less than ones from 6 months ago. Medical debt in collections is viewed more leniently than credit card delinquencies. They’re looking for patterns — one late payment in an otherwise clean history is very different from chronic missed payments.
What They Can’t See
Rental credit checks don’t show your bank account balances, savings, investments, or income directly. That’s why landlords ask for pay stubs and bank statements separately. Your credit report also doesn’t show rent payments unless you’ve used a rent-reporting service — which means years of on-time rent payments may not be helping your score at all.
Protecting Yourself
Pull your own report before apartment hunting. You get free reports from all three bureaus annually at AnnualCreditReport.com. Dispute errors before they cost you an apartment. If your score is borderline, apply to smaller landlords who evaluate the full picture rather than corporate complexes that auto-reject below a threshold.
Each hard inquiry from a credit check dings your score 5-10 points. Multiple rental inquiries within a 14-day window usually count as one. Try to do all your apartment applications within that window. The tenant guide has more on strengthening your rental application, and the rent calculator helps you find your realistic price range.
