Need a Contractor? Thumbtack Finds Five.

The hardest part of any renovation is finding someone reliable to do the work. Thumbtack is a marketplace that matches your project — kitchen remodel, bathroom redo, deck build, whatever — with up to five local pros who send personalized quotes. You compare profiles, reviews, past work photos, and pricing, then hire directly through the platform.

Thumbtack has facilitated millions of projects across the US. It’s free for homeowners; the professionals pay for leads.

What Projects It Covers

Pretty much everything. Kitchen remodels, bathroom renovations, basement finishing, and room additions are all common categories, plus smaller jobs like tile work, drywall repair, cabinet refinishing, and flooring. If someone does it for a living and works on houses, they’re probably on Thumbtack.

Vetting and Protection

Every pro goes through license validation, background checks, and review monitoring. The Thumbtack Guarantee covers property damage up to a set limit for eligible projects booked and paid through the platform. Reviews are verified — only homeowners who actually hired and paid through Thumbtack can leave ratings, which cuts down on the fake review problem that plagues other platforms.

Where Thumbtack Falls Short

The quality of pros varies by market. In major metros, you’ll get strong options. In smaller cities, the pool thins out. Also, some contractors complain about lead costs, which can mean less experienced pros are more active on the platform since established contractors have enough referral work. For homeowners, the fix is simple: check the reviews carefully and ask for references on bigger projects.
